Boris Carloff

Mr Carloff comes from the Czech republic, has a classical education in the violin and has played as a musician in Norway, Germany and Italy. He earns his living as a producer, musician, engineer and mastering boffin here in the Czech Republic. He also has an unhealthy obsession for and collection of bits of very expensive studio equipment! Combine all this with a childhood musical diet of the Jazz and the classics and it’s easy to recognize his musical inspiration and discipline.

For over 10 years now he has been making electronic music, combined mostly with jazz but taking in many musical flavors. In 2003 Boris had his first vinyl released on Tracktion sister label Distraction entitled 'Palm Beat' (mole music). A Latin flavored jazzy house EP that gave insight into his talents...

Back in 2004 he teamed up with Red Salamanda records and had a release entitled the ' Good Stuff EP '. The EP featured 3 tracks and a remix and was received well from all corners of this world. Most notably were the two airings on Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide Radio Show of the track called 'First Joy '. The track featured Boris’ own particular plaintive voice, teamed together with his inspiring musical production and was charted by many a discerning DJ.

Its been a couple of years since Boris got his head down in the studio but we can be sure of an EP release for early 2008 with his debut long player also on the horizon.

Kid Ringo
(a.k.a. James Baseley)

The musical path and the love of the 'Wheels of Steel' started out well over 20 years ago as a school resident DJ playing 80's soul and Hip Hop. True vinyl addiction set in with the birth of the Acid and Warehouse scenes in the late 80's and so seeded a deep-rooted love of spiritual House music that still inspires James to this day. Team all this with years of tinkering in the studio and a musical path was laid out in front of him. The 90's brought us Drum and Bass and other musical variations for the discerning dance floor all of which kept James alive and hungry both as a producer and DJ.

Early Breakbeat and Hardcore productions found themselves onto vinyl for Moving Shadow and Ruff Tuff and Wicked Stuff under the artist monikers Progression and Bash St Kidz. Later in the nineties sunday nights became a religious drum and bass ritual on the dance floor at the legendary Blue Note as one of Metalheadz faithful.

Moving on and into the turn of the new millennium and the sound heading out of West London from the likes of the Bugz crew and I G Culture caught James’ musical ear and inspired him to investigate a new musical vibe. This and a move to Prague lead to the start of the label Red Salamanda out of a desire to release some bruk up business out of his new hometown.
Now James and the Eclectica Crew from Praha head up a slowly emerging brokenbeat scene, putting on nights and working on productions for the young Red Salamanda label.

So that’s where the Kid Ringo story has got to at present, who knows where the musical journey will take it all too next.

The Second Whorl

on the subject of The Second Whorl...
We'd say 'we are a collective' but that probably gets us off on the wrong foot immediately by making us sound like we live in Spitalfields, hate other people, and make a living spray-painting depressing and expensive pop art onto glass panels. Let's start again. We are a bunch of people. We share at least three things with thousands of other bunches of people across the globe: a passion for good music, a desire to create more, and some chance encounters which brought us together a few years ago.

We could name the individuals who make up this group but for two reasons. For a start, we don't know how many people 'the second whorl' encompasses, and it'd be a bit sad to leave people out who haven't done much yet but will soon. The other reason is because the labels that are stuck onto our records will tell you who has done most of the work so far and who deserves the credit. They are rarely the same thing.

The Second Whorl... What is magic today will be science tomorrow
